“Add as a friend” puts more players on the bar – so you see who has which colour.

The commands exist since 1.21.6 and need operator rights. Checked on real 1.21.6 and 26.3 servers: write the hex without #, upper or lower case does not matter. “color reset” brings back the colour from the UUID.
Where does the colour come from?
- Every player has a UUID. Minecraft turns it into a number with
hashCode()and takes its lower 24 bits as an RGB colour. - Of that colour the hue and saturation stay, the brightness is always set to 90 % – that is why there are no black or dark dots.
- If a command gave the player a colour of its own (
/waypoint modify … color), that one counts instead. - The dot gets smaller with the distance: below 128 blocks the full dot, from 332 blocks the smallest. If someone is well above or below you, an arrow shows the direction.
Formula, distances and sprites come from the code of Minecraft 26.3; the colours are compared with the real game code for 2003 random UUIDs – without a single difference. The player name is looked up at Mojang by the MC-Craft API; for offline servers nothing is sent.
