How Minecraft works it out

  • Base speed: 1 by hand; with the right tool wood 2, stone 4, copper 5, iron 6, diamond 8, netherite 9, gold 12.
  • Efficiency adds level² + 1 – but only with the right tool. Haste and Conduit Power give +20 % per level, Mining Fatigue divides by about 3 per level.
  • Under water it is five times slower unless you have Aqua Affinity; off the ground another five times slower.
  • Each tick you get through speed ÷ hardness ÷ 30 of the block – without the right tool only ÷ 100, and then it drops nothing. At a whole block per tick it breaks instantly.
