How it looks in the server list

Description (MOTD)

Every player types the server name themselves when they add the server – it is only here for the preview. The slots are set with max-players in server.properties.

Server icon

PNG, JPG, WebP or GIF – turned into 64×64 pixels.

For your server

Tested on real 1.12.2 and 26.3 servers: the line with § works in every version – including special characters that old servers would otherwise break.

How to put it on your server

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Open server.properties in the server folder and replace the line that starts with motd= with the copied line.
  3. Download server-icon.png and put it straight into the server folder – next to server.properties. Keep the name exactly like that.
  4. Start the server – description and icon show up in the server list. Players see the new icon once they refresh the list.
  • The server list shows at most 2 lines. Minecraft wraps long lines – whatever does not fit into 2 lines is cut off. The preview shows exactly that.
  • Without a colour the text is grey – that is how the server list draws every description.
  • Custom hex colours do not work in server.properties, only the 16 Minecraft colours. The line with & is meant for plugins such as ServerListPlus or MOTDs in Spigot/Paper plugins.
  • The icon has to be exactly 64×64 pixels and a PNG, otherwise the server ignores it. The generator does that for you.
